Emma Augusta Sprenger was born on 27 August 1888, at Aurora, Illinois, USA. ; From Emma's birth certificate, her godparents were Herman Seifert and Dorotha Stritte, and the Pastor signing the paper was W. Krebs. She was baptized on 30 Sep. 1888 in Aurora, Ill. The paper also gives the spelling Sprenger for her parents and Haach was her Mother's maiden name.
Writing on the certificate says:
Mark 16:16 says, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Mark 10:15 says, Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.1 She was the daughter of Herman Frederick Sprenger and Johanna Maria Caroline Haach.
Emma Augusta Sprenger married Edward Arthur Krienke, son of Eduard Krienke and Amelia "Mollie" Wilhelmine Karnath, on 5 March 1907, at Trinity Lutheran Church, , . 65th anniversary of founding Trinity Lutheran Church, 1906-1971, Lemburg, Saskatchewan
Book: # 971.24 A1: contains: 23 p. : ill., ports.
As of 5 March 1907,her married name was Krienke.

Emma Augusta Sprenger 1935/6 Emma left Eddie due to an affair with the mother of Art Krienke's wife, Mildred Shaw. She moved to Fort Frances since Henry was already settled there. Henry and Beatrice had moved there in 1932, and Art and Milly soon followed. Emma was a very religious person, until the day she died, and she was very hard on Eddie (no smoking or chewing tobacco in the house, no drinking).

1934- Oran says that Dorothea and Henry went back toTisdale to see Eddie, but Dorothea got into some kind of argument or fight with Milly's mother and that was that. There are pictures of the car and the people from that trip.

Eddie apperently at some time in the 30's did in fact seek out Emma in Fort Frances and tried to make up, but she would have none of it. Tiny Phillips (Jan. 26 1999), also told me that when Eddy came back in the late 30's and tried to make up with Emma, she would have none of it. She shouted and screammed at him and drove him away. But to the day she died, she still was waiting for Eddie to come back to her. To this end Oran recalls that his voice especially over the phone was remarkably similar to Eddies and when he called her she still thought it was Eddie coming back to get her. Tiny Phillips(Frenette) seemed to think that Eddy and Emma Shaw had a son. I have never heard of this.

According to Oran (Cutsie) Krienke, Gramma stated that she could see the glow from the Chicage fire. However, the great fire was on Oct 8, 1871 before she was born. But there was also a fire on Dec 30, 1903 at a large theatre. It must have been huge since 603 people were killed, so this is possibly what she meant. At the time she was probably still in Aurora, Ill., which is 48 km from the centre of Chicago. (The story that she was from Independence Miss. and still saw the fire can not be true as Independence is about 659 km west of Chicago. between 1934 and 1950.
Emma Augusta Sprenger died on 28 August 1973, at Fort Frances, Ont..

Henry Herman Krienke Kevin mentioned (Jan 6, 1999) that his Dad Freeman had the shoulder patches of the Royal Canadian Forestry Corps that belonged to Henry. This may explain the picture of Henry in Uniform even though he did not go to the war.

Beatrice said that Henry made it as far as Val Cartier in the army, but he had two bad hips and never made it through basic training. Nothing was said of a bad heart. There must be a record of him in the service. in 2000.2

Had a car with two different size wheels, front and back. (must get more of this from Milton and Doreen).

Prussia implemented the draft during the struggle against Napoleon and the applicable law (for your ancestor) was passed in 1814 and was in force till 1859. Up to 1831 draftees could serve their "active" service in the Landwehr (Reserveforce). From 1831 on that time on the active service had to be carried out in regular units. Although volunteers could enter with the age of 17, the compulsory service started with 20 (thus in 1842) and lasted three years, followed by 2 years 1 line Reserve. There are exceptions for "well educated" volunteers, who only had to serve 1 year at their own expense.

His story as written by one of his sons, Walter.

Just before he turned 17, Edward left Germany for America (to avoid Army service), and landed somewhere in Pennsylvannia. He had several trades (flour miller, millwright, butcher, carpenter, mason and if all else failed he could farm) so got his first job running a flour mill, where he stayed for three years. Like many new immigrants, he became homesick, and thus left for a visit to his parents home in Germany. But after only 2 days, friends informed him of impending arrest by the Military Police, so he slipped over the Border(only 3 miles east of Posen) into Poland. His parents would have been in more trouble, but this was ironed out due to the fact that Daniel was a justice of the peace. On leaving this trip he settled in Germania, Wis., where he again became employed running a water powered flour mill. The foundation of the water wheel is still to be seen in Germania (Walter visited it in 1965).

He met Amelia in Germania, and married her. They never again returned to Germany. The church in which they were married is still standing in Germania, I have a photo of it taken 2004.

Sometime after the marriage, Edward and Amelia moved to Dubuque, Iowa where they had a butcher shop. From their they spent a few years in Mineapolis, Minn, and finally moved on to Young America, Minn and Iona, Minn. Minnie was born in Iona, but they did not stettle for long. They had Albert, the next child in Riverfalls, Wis. The last palce they lived in the east was Stillwater, Minn. where they ran a boarding house.

A Jim Hill, who built the Great Northern R.R. from Minneapolis to Seatle, boarded with them in Stillwater, and later in Wash. he gave Amelia a ticket back to Minn and Wis. so she could visit her parents, but she never used the ticket.

Another incident in Stillwater involved the Younger Brothers of Jesse James fame. Apparently Edward met them on the road after they had robbed a bank and lost their horses. They hit him on the side of his head with a pistol, knocked him out, and took his team and buckboard. He carried the mark on his head of the pistol whipping the rest of his life.

From Stillwater, they moved on to Casselton, N.D. and there worked on Dalrymple Farm as foreman. The farm consisted of 24 sections, 15360 acres, of land. In the fall it took 43 binders (Osborne Wire Binders) to cut all the grain. Photo found under Eduard.

After two years they moved on to Portland, where they farmed for themselves. One day while plowing some local Sioux Indians started sometrouble, and the local farmers formed a group and spent a week chasing or fighting indians. After the peace was made and the pipe smoked Edward went back to his plowing. (A very interesting episode.)

After several bad seasons of rain, hail and frost, they quit the farm and took over a hotel in Blanchard, N.D. where Walter was born. But as business was not so good they again moved on. This time (according to an article by Brian Krienke the year was 1889) to a flour mill in St. Norbert, Man. an the banks of the Red River. The mill partially burned 2.5 years later and through a deal with some farmers from Ellisboro and Lemburg in the Qu'Appelle Valley (near a Lake called Chew's laterbrenamed Heils, 8 miles long by 0.5 miles wide) they moved the remains to Sask. It required 20 teams of ox to move the boiler and the other machinery from Grenfell through the valley. (about the years 1895-6)

Edward and the boys, Carl, Otto and Albert, built the family a sod house on the mill site. The size was 50 x 40 feet in area and dug into a hill about 4 feet. It had one window in the rear and a dorr and window in the front. The roof was covered with branches, straw and sod. (I guess this is the type of house seen in the picture of Dorothea Krienke) Water was drawn from a dug well and a lime kiln was constructed to make mortar for the foundation of the mill (built about 80 feet from the lake). The mill originally used a grinding wheel, but a new set of rollers was purchased since they could grind or roll grain to flou much quicker. However in less than a year the crops failed due to a bad freeze and the bank foreclosed on the mill. They could not pay the money advanced for the rollers.

During the entire time the family was extremely hard up, and Walter writes about existing on milk, potatoe soup and the odd bit of rabbit, prairie chicken and salt pork. In fact there was not even sufficient cutlery for everyone, so Edward carved some from wood. They did have enough to buy lumber after the mill started to work and built a barn. Walter writes of racing Zelma in sock feet in the snow between the house and the barn, just for exercise. This took place in the years 1887-8.

After the foreclosure of the mill, they had to move in 4 months and all they could take was a wagon and three horses. Walter does not say where they lived and farmed, but only that it was a very hard two years. In winter to earn money Carl, Otto and Albert took their teams 35 miles up the valley to cut wood which was hauled back and sold in Wolsey for $2.75 - $3.00 per load. The tree boys were living on their own homestead and Minnie was already married.

At this time Amelia had rheumatism and dreamed of moving to California, so Edward, son Eddy and a foster brother Charley Clow started out with 3 horses and a wagon (about April 1, 1899) for the sunny state. After three months of traveling and working for food and lodging they had made it to Davenport, Wash., where they attached themselves to a group of German settlers. They got work there and sent for Amelia, and never made it to California. The family back east packed and took the C.P.R. from Wolsey to Lethbridge and from there a narrow gauge R.R. to Shelbourne, Montana. The second leg of the trip took from 9:00 am until 2:30 am the next day. There was no room at the hotel so they had to sleep on fur coats on the floor. They continued on the Great Northern to Spokane and from there on the Northern Pacific to Davenport. The trip was made about Oct 20, 1899.

Walter at this time attended school. Only he was almost ten years old and had to start in grade 1. The other kids did find it a bit strange.

Eduard Krienke Checked the Germania near Tigerton, Shawano, Co. but is not correct, no church ot development until after 1870+.

Germania, Marquette Co., had early church, have photos, also was a river flowing through town with a grist mill, the Mecan River. Today the church is a home and records are ???. Two cemeteries close, one Methodist, the other Lutheran, photos. Many people with names I know, but only a Phillips that may be correct.

Some books photocopied and addresses taken, no concrete data. in 2005, at Germania, Marquette, Wisconsin.6

Amelia "Mollie" Wilhelmine Karnath was born on 21 January 1847, at Malinerfelde, , West Prussia, Prussia. At #5 at 4:00 am and bap. 14 February; Father Ferdinand Kornath an Oat(k)anom (just may be Ackemann) and mother is Henriette geb Eichmann.
GP: Adam Eichmann an Ackermann aüs Mahlinerfeld, Fraü Wittwe Anna Dorothea Janzen aus Eulenkrug.
Photo 15 Apr. 09.2 She was the daughter of Ferdinand David Karnath and Eva Henriette Eichmann. Amelia "Mollie" Wilhelmine Karnath witnessed the immigration of Ferdinand David Karnath in 1864 at From Danzig area through Quebec City to, , Marquarette, ; Family says the year was 1863, but with the son's death in Nov. 1863 they probably came in 1864.
Adam Eichmann was very sick on the voage and he stayed on longer in Quebec City.3
As of 11 November 1869,her married name was Rimpler.4

Amelia "Mollie" Wilhelmine Karnath married Julius Rimpler, son of Carl Rimpler and Wilhelmine (?), on 11 November 1869, at Princeton, Green Lake, WI.4
Amelia "Mollie" Wilhelmine Karnath married Eduard Krienke, son of Daniel "Krincke" Krienke and Anna Christina Bohn, after 1871, at Germania, Marquette Co., Wisconsin, USA.
As of after 1871,her married name was Krienke.

Amelia "Mollie" Wilhelmine Karnath witnessed the birth of Anna Charotte Krienke on 23 February 1883 at Bap. 14 May 1883, Bohnsack Twp., Trail, N. Dak; Sponsor: C. Rust, Amelia Krienke (Probably Amelia Karnath, Edward's wife)
Confirmed 2 April 1886.
Probably moved to Minnesota: from Damaris Eichmann.5
Amelia "Mollie" Wilhelmine Karnath died on 19 April 1907, at Farm Rocklyn, Wash., buried Luthern Cem. Davenport, Wash.. Davenport Mountain View Cemetery
Krienke, Amelia: (1846-1907); “Mrs Amelia Krinke of Rocklyn, died suddenly the 19th of April, aged 61. She was the mother of 12 children. Funeral services were held from the German Lutheran church in Davenport.” (Citizen: 5-03-1907);

“Mrs Amelia Krinke, wife of E Krinke who resides near Rocklyn, died very suddenly last Friday morning of heart trouble. At the time of her death she was sixty-one years of age, and was the mother of twelve children, seven of whom are living. She has resided here about seven years during which time she made many friends. The funeral services were held Monday in the German Lutheran church here.

Rev Geo Koehler conducting the service. The remains were laid at rest in the German Lutheran Cemetery.” (Dav. Tribune: 4-25-1907)

http://www.wagenweb.org/lincoln/obitsdavenportkrthrukz.htm.6
Amelia "Mollie" Wilhelmine Karnath Had 13 children in all, the 11 listed plus still born twins in 1879.

Amelia died before Eduard due to heart trouble. It happened 6 months after a visit from (?) Krienke and his family. Apparently she kept her heart pills inder the bed and one of the children found the bottle ate some of the pills and died. The only child who fits these dates would be a child of Albert's called Earnest.

After Amelia's death Eduard returned to Southey and that is where his head stone is. Norman had the stone moved, so the body is no longer under the stone. (All of this came from Milton and Doreen Krienke.)

From Patrick Eichmann: I have the 1880 census showing :
     Karnath Ferdinand      W M 62               born: 1818
Henrietta           W F 58 Wife           born: 1822
Gustoph           W M 21 Son          born: 1859

Zelmer           W M 13 Son          born:1867
Richard           W M 9 Gr. son          born:1871

That would make Zelmer born abt 1866. I couldn't find a Zelma listed. The grandson Richard, I believe is Amelia's son born to her by a Julius Rimpler in Princeton in 1870. She must have been married to him abt 1869 and then married Edward Krienke later. Richard was left with Eva & David when she and Eduard left for Minnesota where the Krienke children were born.

Doreen and Milt tried to remember some things and all they could come up with is: a good family man and a very good and kind Father; a great bargain hunter and haggler (seems this is a Krienke trait). Seems he especially loved to haggle with the local junk dealer Goldman.

Albert Adolph Krienke According to Doreen Krienke, there is a funny story about the marriage of Albert to Mary Martin. It seems that Carl, his brother, wanted to marry Mary's sister Caroline as well. The girls were a little on the young side, so Carl and Albert went and picked them up by buggy and headed for the nearest town to get married. The girls parents got wind of the plot and followed in order to put a stop to the wedding. But Carl and Albert outsmarted the parents by not stopping at the first town, but going on to the second where the weddings in due course took place. The parents did not make it past the first town. Just like an episode of the Keystone cops.

According to Hash Krienke (Feb. 7, 1999) Carl and Albert had a flour mill in Lemburg, Sask., and it was here that Hash's father had a hotel. This town is where Dorothea was born.

There are several death, birth and burial reports for some of Alberts children in the folder documents under the folder Krienkes to 1930's.

From a letter to Laura from Lawrence Pohl (son of Eleanore Marie) given me by Doreen in Aug. 1999, Albert was living on Woolman Ave., San Diego in 1920. It gives his age as 42, and Mary's age as 39 (born 1881). His children are also listed.

The major part of this family 's childrens marriages and subsequent children was from a typed sheet BettyeMae Krienke sent me in Sep. of 1999.
Albert Adolph Krienke was born on 9 January 1878, at Riverfalls, close to St. Paul, Wisconsin, USA.1 He was the son of Eduard Krienke and Amelia "Mollie" Wilhelmine Karnath.

MY LIFE STORY by Minnie Andrews of Southey, SK

I was born Minnie Jolly in the Electoral District of Wolsely near a place called Ellisboro on September 9, 1895. We lived on a farm until moving to Lemburg where my Dad had an implement business.

While there, my brother and I walked a mile out of town to school until one could be built in the town. The barn was finished first and school was held there until the school house was finished. We had a small skating rink in our back yard to which all the kids came to skate. My dad passed away in March, 1907 after which my mother — 3 brothers - 2 sisters and myself went to the States to stay with my grandfather. In the fall after the birth of my youngest sister we came back to Lemberg. Five of my brothers and Sisters went to Lemberg to stay with Uncles and Aunts. I went to Grenfell. While there, I walked a mile and a half to school in town. In the spring of 1908 my mother came to Southey and built a small two storey house, the upper part being used for living quarters and the lower used for a
restaurant. Meals were served for 25 cents each and in the fall when settlers were hauling their wheat and getting their supplies there would be as many as 25 to 35 for meals. Mom also baked 50 loaves of bread a day, which she mixed by hand in a wash tub, using a coal and wood stove for the baking. Later on she got a bake oven which was a big help. Twice a week we shipped a 100 lb. flour bag full of bread to Markinch which was sold for 16 loaves for $1.00. The bread had to be on the train at 5:00 in the morning and it was my job to take it to the station which was a box car.

All the water used had to be carried from the basement of an old building and since there was no light there a lantern always had to be taken along.

My mother also boarded men that were building elevators and threshing crews too at $18.00 per month. When it happened that there were 2 crews at a time we fed the crews one hour a part as there wasn?t room for both at once.

The town, besides our restaurant, consisted of one elevator called the Maple Leaf, one general store which housed everything including the Post Office, as well as implements etc. and was owned by Albert and Carl Erienke. There was a small pool room
owned by Lewie Maier, and a hotel owned by Foster and Son, and a livery barn owned by Jim Craig.

There were 2 blacksmith shops, one owned by Carl Ellis and one by John Wynhart and a shoe repair shop owned by Mr. Volhoffer. There was also a Lutheran Church, a Catholic Church and a small school.

We young people amused ourselves by playing ball and crack the whip in the summer and in the winter walked a mile out of town to skate on a large slough.
In the year 1910, Pieram and Co. brought in settlers from the United States who bought land in the district and so the country was slowly settled.

In 1911, a school was built, a Royal Bank and other businesses including another store came to town and also some more dwellings. Dr. McEvan came in 1909 and had his office in his living quarters. He left in 1912 when Dr. Hutchinson came to town. My mother was his first patient and my sister his first baby here.

In the spring of 1911 my mother sold the restaurant and moved to a farm north of town. In the fall my mother remarried, the groom being Jim Craig, the owner of the Livery Barn, after which we came to town as he still had the livery barn. In 1913 he sold it and we moved back to the farm where we lived for a number of years.

When I was 16 I started nursing helping the doctor wherever I was needed and even brought 2 babies into the world without his assistance.

I also cooked for bachelors, threshing crews and worked whenever I was called upon and so it went until I met a young man from Prince Edward Island by the name of Norman Andrews. He was a farmer and needed a helpmate and as I was agreeable, we married in 1921 and went to live on a farm north of Earl Grey. We lived there a year and the following fall we moved across the road on another farm and then moved to Southey in the fall. In the spring we moved to another farm farther north of Earl Grey on which we lived for 2 years, then moved to the farm which we lived on until we retired.

We had 3 children, Edna, who is now Mrs. Sid Hillier; Jim, our eldest son, who is now an elevator agent at Raymore; and Tilson, our youngest son who lives northwest of Southey is a well driller.

In 1957, my husband suffered a heart attack through which I nursed him for 6 weeks at home on the farm. During this time the W. I. or Crossroads Homemakers as they were known then were very kind and helpful bringing a bed tray and many other useful things. Following this, my husband was not able to carry on the farm work without help. Our sons helped when they could but finding other help hard to get we finally sold the farm and retired to Southey in 1964. He steadily grew worse and needed a lot of care which I gave him until he passed away in 1969. Since then I have continued to live in our home in Southey watching the town grow and enjoying the visits of my children, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Walter Krienke and his family were all big people, all over 6' 2", one of his sons was 6' 4" and weighed 230 pounds.

Walter wrote a good part of the Krienke book, but a part was written by Minnie Andrews of Southey. A story tells of the time Walter and Minnie got together and instead of being cordial argued over each others memories of events. It must have been deeply felt since when the book was published with Minnies part, Walter used a rasor blade and cut out her pages from all the copies in his possesion.

Christoph Krienke The Polish–Swedish Wars were a series of wars between the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and Sweden. Broadly construed, the term refers to a series of wars between 1563 and 1721. More narrowly, it refers two particular wars between 1600 and 1629. These are the wars included under the broader use of the term:
the 16th century conflict sometimes referred to as the Livonian War (1558–1583)
the War against Sigismund, in 1598
the war of 1600–1629 (sometimes considered a part of the larger trans-European Thirty Years' War) which was twice interrupted by periods of truce and can be divided into:
the war of 1600–1611
the war of 1617–1618
the war of 1621–1625
the war of 1626–1629

the conflicts in the second half of the 17th century known as The Deluge (part of Northern Wars 1655–1661)
the Northern Wars in 1655–1661
the Polish–Swedish war, also known as the Great Northern War (1700–1721). between 1563 and 1721.1
Christoph Krienke was born in 1763, at Radczicz, , Posen, Prussia. At From age 29 when married in 1792; Christoph was married here so one assumes he was born here. Since no records exist prior to 1772 this is the best one can do.

The following came from the Krienke book, and I assume he got it by word of mouth from Christoph's grandson Eduard. Christoph's trade was tischlemeister and landwirt (cabinetmaker and farmer). Born in Posen, Germany, which at the time of his birth was 12 miles west of the Polish border. Looking at a map of Radczicz, it is just north of the Netze ( Notec) River which was the border between the old Neumark and Poland. But later this area became part of the Prussian province of Posen. Poznan is and was a city in the province of the same name, but much further south. By Eduard's time the family had moved to the south side of the river, to the village of Antonina.

After final partition of Poland in 1795, much of Poland became Prussian (other parts either Russian or Austro-Hungarian), but then in 1807 after the victories of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Prussian part was for some years independent as so-called Duchy of Warsaw. After Congress of Vienna in 1815, these territories were divided again - the Bydgoszcz (Bromberg) region to Prussia and the Warsaw region to Russia. The Prussian section extended just a few mile south of the Netze River so again in Eduard's time the border was probably 12 miles south of Antonina. The southerly section or Russian part was called "Kingdom of Poland" but that "kingdom" was totally dependent to Russia and in fact a part of Russian Empire. In all respects, Poland did not exist until the end of WWI in 1918.

The name Krienke changed its spelling between Christoph's marriage in 1792 and the birth if Daniel in 1800. In 1792 he spelled his name Krineke, and it changed to the present form Krienke, but even on the 1906 census for Sask. his grandson Eduard spelled it Krincke. Another common variation is Krinke. There are many Krinkes in the USA today who I think are part of our family.2 He was the son of Christian Krienke and Maria Elisabeth Zinn.

Christoph Krienke My own research only shows that during the 1700's the invading Swedish Army marched through Schneidemühl and demanded quarters from the locals. So Radczicz being near would have suffered as well if only through the loss of food taken by the invaders. It was during the many Northern wars that the towns and churches were sacked and the early records lost.

Later, I was told by an 89-year-old person from Schneidemühl that his grandmother used to say "Rather the French as enemies than the Russians as friends." This is because in 1807 and again 1812, Napolean's Armies, numbering 700,000 in 1812, must have marched very close to this area and thus Christoph and other locals would have suffered hardship as the locals supplied the food for the invaders as well as horses for their transport.

According to the Dictionary of the Napoleonic Wars by David G. Chandler during the Campaign of Russia, 1812 Napoleon arrived from Buntzlau to Poznan on May 30 at 8 pm via Glogau. He remained in Posen from May 31 to June 1 then departed Posen at 3 am and went to Thorn. Another source I consulted indicated he arrived in Posen on May 29th. between 1807 and 1812, at Napoleonic wars., , .8
Christoph Krienke died on 7 December 1844, at #42-35 1844, age 77j of alters schwäche, Antonina, , Posen, Prussia. Died at age 77 year of alters schwache, a term used for old people who really died of old age and general decrepity.
His occupation now is listed as tischler meister, master cabinet maker and his death was reported by "sohn", son, but no parents listed.
Seems Walter was correct. At earlier times he is only listed as ackersmann, farmer or field hand.
Walter's death date was 12 Jan 1844, but that is not correct.9
Christoph Krienke The "Dictionary" of 1882 states that Hermansdorf was the German name for the town of Radczicz. Probably changed circa 1870 when modern Germany was founded.

It is interesting to note that at the end of WWII, one of Hermansdorf's three bürgermeister's was a Wachholtz. As well there was a total of five Krienke families and three Wachholtz families with total holdings of 259.5 acres.
These families were driven west by the advancing Russian Army and became displaced persons in Germany proper. They lost all their property in Poland. in 1945, at Radczicz, , Poznan.10
