Ferdinand was a very tall man, 6 foot, 6 inches. His wife Eva Henrietta was equally tall, 6 foot, exceptionaly tall for people of that era. Eva (Eichmann) Karnath and her husband, David, lived in Newton Township and probably are buried in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. There is no marker and probably disintegrated back in time, but there should be a burial record in the church records. This is a bit of research for the next researcher that is in the area with some time to do it. It should be noted that David Karnath went by his middle name, Ferdinand. That would also be the same cemetery where Eva's twin brother, Adam, is buried.

Hi David.... I have photos of Karnath markers in the St. Paul Cemetery in Newton Township. (1) They are J.A. Karnath 1863-1866 (This is a plain flat marker, looks like it is made out of cement);(2) KARNATH, Father Gustav F. 1858-1942, Mother Ottilie 1866-1947 (both names on same marker); (3)KARNATH, Eda Tochter von G. & O. Karnath Dec 19, 1888-Nov 22, 1918, Rhue Sanft.
Are these connected to Eva and David Karnath???

David answered
Eva (Eichmann) Karnath and her husband, David, lived in Newton Township and probably are buried in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. There is no marker and probably disintegrated back in time, but there should be a burial record in the church records. This is a bit of research for the next researcher that is in the area with some time to do it. It should be noted that David Karnath went by his middle name, Ferdinand. That would also be the same cemetery where Eva's twin brother, Adam, is buried.

Clifford Ernest Neely The Standard Chemical Company built a large sawmill and chemical plant in South River in 1904. The timber came from local forests, and any tree not suitable for sawlogs and lumber was turned into charcoal. The gaseous effluent was collected and from the liquid they recovered wood alcohol (methanol), ehylt acetate and formaldyhde. I suspect the rest was dumped into a pond or sold as wood tar.

The mill and plant was the major employer in South River and the town quickly became known as "Charcoal Town".

In 1917 they laid 25 miles of track in the area to replace some of the horse drawn wagons and sleighs that delivered the wood to the mill. In 1946 the tracks were removed and trucks (supposedly more efficient) were used for hauling. The road was laid on the old railway roadbed, and the road and bridge are still referred toas "Chemical Road" and "Chemical Bridge".

Moved from Meaford to the Gravel Pit at age 12, and attended Laurier Twp. Public School.

According to Muriel, Clifford married Ellen when she was already pregnant with a child fathered by Clifford's brother R.J.

After marriage, they lived in the Gravel Pit until 1945 when they moved to South River.

Clifford worked for the South River Charcoal Plant for 35 years and at the Clarke Veneer Plant until his retirement.

Funeral service was Oct. 26, 1987 in Sundridge, On. Pallbearers were Art Loney, Mel Loney, Dennis Loney, Howard Neely, Gary Furlong, and Howard Driver.[Langstaff Jul 26 01.FTW]
