Joan McHugh has written a book about Muskoka called “Beloved Muskoka: Diaries and Recollections of Elizabeth Penson” and it contains the following memoir written by Seymour Penson..
Seymour (1851-1944) was the father of Elisabeth ( 1884-1974) and the great grandfather of Joan McHugh.
It is interesting to note that Francis was still alive when Seymour wrote the memoir.

Frank Forge was perhaps the best known man around Lake Rosseau at that time. He was a Yorkshireman who had been a farm labourer in England, He must have come to Canada when he was quite a young man, for he had worked on a farm in Markham, Ontario for some years, and he had been living on Lake Rosseau for eight years when we arrived, yet he could not have been more than thirty-five when we first saw him.

He settled on lots 28 and 29 in the 7th Concession of Watt, and lived in a little log shanty that faced out in Portage Bay, and when I first saw his place in 1869, he had about 25 or 30 acres of nice land well cleared and fenced. He was married and had a family of young children. His wife was a cheerful little woman, and a very real help to a man in his circumstances; he had married her whilst living at Markham.

The Forges endured great hardships when they first came to the bush. Frank’s capital amounted to only eighteen dollars, but he managed to eke this out by working for people on Three Mile Lake, and in this way he kept himself and wife until he could grow something for themselves. They must have lived very primitively, potatoes and fish were their principal diet, and bread was a luxury, for every pound of flour that they used had to be carried in from Severn Bridge on Frank's back. He was a very strong man, and could carry in one hundred pounds at once, but the trip took him three days, for the roads were rough, being mere trails out through the bush by the settlers themselves. There was no Bracebridge in those days, and of course no bridges across the streams, they had to cross the Muskoka River at the falls, on a log.

This was roughing it in earnest, and yet these people were not discouraged; they worked very hard to improve their land, and to increase the size of their clearings, and waited patiently for the tide of immigration to turn their way, to bring them neighbours and the better facilities for living that they never doubted would come in time.

Frank was a loosely built, powerful man, and he spoke with a strong Yorkshire dialect. It was his nature to be bright and cheerful and kind, and he was very religious - when it did not interfere with business. He dearly loved driving a bargain, and it must be admitted that he was a very good hand at it. He generally managed to bring his wife and family into any discussion about terms, "The Missis and t'yoong un's" he would say, when hiring to work, or selling a bag of potatoes, "The Missis and t' yoong un's afore iverything, I could do no better wiv'ee in joos-tice to the Missis and t’yoong un's, Sir."

When he took his oxen to do a day's work for a new settler, he certainly worked harder than any man that I ever knew, but when he was trading he was very shrewd. In his early days in the bush, there was very little money in sight; almost every transaction was done by trading, and so he had practised in a good school. "When a man's tradin'a coo or a hox, he can't think of ivery word he's sayin', it's for toother chap to do the thinking." This was not only Frank's precept, it was the way of the country. Taken all round, Frank Forge was one of the most desirable settlers for a country like Muskoka, that I have ever known.9
Francis "Frank" Forge died on 2 January 1930, at #25267, buried Ulswater Cemetery, 6 January., , Muskoka Parry Sound, . Francis was born the 15 Aug. 1838 in England, the son of William Forge and no mother listed but both born in England and he died at age of 91 years 4 months and 17 days.
Cause of death was m?yocardial failure with apoplexy contributing. His Dr was M. Bastedo.
Informant was Wm. Aitken, of Windermere, his son-in-law.
He had lived in Ont. and Canada for 70 years and in Winderemere for 67 years.2

Florence Helen Pamela Rich From an e_mail, Mar. 2003:
You are right in assuming we don't have children. Right now we have two elderly cats and a young dog call Lucy. She is a brilliant canine and does therapy work with seniors as well as being a star in dog agility. She is a mixed breed, a husky cross. As well she is a rescue dog. I'll bet you are really interested in that information. Be that as it may, the Rich family are great animal lovers.

1851 Census, found in district 18, Madoc Township. Aged 28 at next birthday.
In 1851 (Roll C-11727) he is listed as running an inn in a frame house. He had three people living with his family:
Edwin Edson from the US of no known age,
Mary Galloway and 17 year old Irish girl,
William Kidd age 35 from England.
There are two other Moon families living in Huntingtdon Twp., where Lyman was listed as being born.
I assume they are his Father and older brother.1
Lyman Moon was in at, Hastings, , on the 1861 census
In the 1861 census, Lyman's tavern is a frame building measuring 30' x 48' and of 2 stories. It is located on 1/4 acre of land where he also keeps 1 cow. He has $2000 in vested and employs 4 people:
Lachlie McHuiga, a 24 year old Pres. Scotsman as clark; (paid $ 12 per month)
Hugh Campbell, a 17 year old Canadian R.C. as servant; (paid $ 12 per month)
Mary Gagnon, a 20 year old C.E. Irish girl as servant; (paid $ 7 per month)
Sarah Ray, a 16 year old Canadian C.E. member as servant. (paid $ 7 per month)

Allan Moon, age 20, Dutch,

Jeannie Moon, age 15,
Lillian Moon, age 13,
Minnie Moon, age 9 (girls allclaim Scotch).
Roll # C-9994, Madoc, Hastings North, E1, page 23 line 19.
It seems that Lyman died between 1861 and 1871 and Margaret is now running the tavern and she is listed as a widow.

Roll C - 9994 pages 23/24 line 19 shows Lyman is no longer living at home and the tavern has 1 carriage/sleigh, is still 1/4 of an acre on lot 1 conc 6, but now she keeps:
2 cows and 3 pigs and has killed 2 pigs in the last year.
It is strange since now she is listed as being of Scotish origin, yet the 1891 (T-6343) census states her parents both came from Ireland.

The 1901 census (T-6473) confirms her father as being Irish, and states she was Irish as well.
Margaret made a good go of the tavern it seems as she had 7 people employed in 1891.3
