Arthur McNickle McNickle Family Cemetery
McNickle Cemetery is a private burying ground of the McNickle Family who lived on Lot 6 in the Broken Front pf Escott (now called Leeds and the Thousand Islands Township). The cemetery is at the extreme north end of the farm along the south side of a hill. Groundfill and logs were added at the front of the cemetery to achieve a level surface and depth for burials. The cemetery is about ten metres square.
Arthur and Catherine McNickle raised a family of ten children: John, Anne, Mary, George, Catherine, Arthur, William, Dorothy, Susan and Henry but only some of the members of the family were buried there.
There are two stones: one is a tall gray marble stone containing all the names, and the other is a white marble slab, now broken in two.

Joseph Hollowood

M, b. 1776, d. 6 June 1836

Joseph Hollowood was born in 1776, at, Kings, (Offaly), , Ireland. ; The name comes from the marriage of her daughter Harriet or Hannah. Name was Hollywood, Neelin has it as Hollowood.

The following was found in "More Irish Surnames of Interest" by the Ontario Genealogical Society.

Jane b. ca. 1811 or 1814 in Ireland to Joseph Hollowood, b. 1776 Tullamore, Co. Kings (Offaly). He enlisted at age 21 (1797) and served successively in the 7th Dragoon Guards until 1814, then in the 4th Veterans and the 12th Veterans until 1814, then emigrated to Gloucester Twp. Carleton County, Upper Canada. He died 6 June 1836 age 64, was of the Church of England. Beside daughter Jane he had son Willim born ca. 1821 possibly in U.C. The researcher who did this was J.M. Neelin, 27 Broadway Ave. Ottawa K1S 2V4, ph 234-3447.1 He began military service between 1797 and 1814 at 7th Dragoon Guards and 4th Veterans and the 12th Veterans, , , Ireland.1

Joseph Hollowood emigrated circa 1814 to at Gloucester twp.1

Joseph Hollowood 1833
Joseph Hollywood and Andrew Langstaff are listed for W lot 15, conc. 5 with 90 acres, and 10 clear. It seems they are on the same piece of land. Joseph has a family of 2 males over 16, 2 females under and over 16 for a total of 6 people. Andrew is one each male and female over 16, and on daughter under 16.

1834
Further evidence of Joseph Holliwood I found was in the 1834 census (Roll # M-7735), in Gloucester. At the time he was on west part of lot 15, Cons. 5 of the township, and had 100 acres of which only 4 were cleared. The value of the land was listed as 23£, 4s, and paid paid taxes that year of 1£ 1s of a rate of 5.5 s/ acre. Later both Joseph and Andrew appear on the rolls on the same lot with the same acreage. Andrew Langstaff is not mentioned.

1835
Joseph (now spelt Hollywood) is now occupying the same lot with Andrew Langstaff. They have now cleared 10 acres of the 100 and his family is listed only as 2 males over 16, 2 females over 16, and 2 females under 16. The over 16 males would be himself and his son William, the over 16 females would be his wife and another daughter. His daughter Jane is probably listed with Andrew as his family consisted of himself a female over 16 and one son under 16.
Joseph's land was now valued at 34£ and he paid taxes of £L 10s. Andrew Langstaff was not listed and he paid nothing/ It seems likely that Andrew and Jane were sharing the farm with her Father.

1836
Nothing has changed from 1835, the two families are still there only now Joseph's family does not have a daughter over 16, and they have 1milk cow and 2 calves while Andrew has 2 milk cows.

1837
Joseph has died as the land is listed in his wife Isabell's name and the farm has been split between Isabell and Andrew (Isabell got the NW half (10 of 50 clear) and Andrew the SW half (6 of 50 clear). Isabell's family is still listed as 5 2/>16 males, 2/>16 females and 1/<16 female. He died 6 June 1836 age 64, was of the Church of England, according to researcher J.M. Neelin, 27 Broadway Ave. Ottawa K1S 2V4, ph 234-3447, see Jane for details. between 1833 and 1837, at W lot 15, Cons. 5, , Russell, .1
Joseph Hollowood died on 6 June 1836, at at age 64, , Russell, .1
