I learned that one of the ships my father, Alfred T.B. LONGHURST, served on was the Haida. It was commissioned 30 August 1943.

It was the first Canadian ship to sink an enemy destroyer on 26 April 1944. Under leadership of its captain Harry DeWolf, it's glorious war record included the sinking of two trawlers, one submarine, two minesweepers, and five destroyers. It sank the German ship that sank sister ship HMCS Athabaskan as it drove it to destruction on a reef.

The Haida was present at the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6,1944 and later served with United Nations forces in Korea between 1952 and 1954.

If any of your family members served in the military, I would be interested in hearing about it. Both my maternal grandfather, Dan Podgorenco, and my father received medals for service to Canada.
