Lyman Moon From the 1857 Province of Ontario Directory with Gazateer, edited by Thomas and Emily Wilson, Lyman Moon was living in Madoc, Hastings Co., in 1857 and was listed as a hotel keeper.

"Lyman Moon and Margaret Moore Moon settled in Madoc in 1857 and established the Moon Hotel and later the Moon House at Stirling. The Moon Hotel remained in the family for 46 years and was one of the best known hotels in Hastings County.

Lyman died in 1868 and his widow Margaret continued the business. She died 26 January 1904 at age 79. Allan Moon, the second son, operates Moon House."

Extract from "Pioneer Life in the Bay of Quinte", in collection of National Archives 971.3, D2p. Published in 1907. between 1852 and 1861, at religion E. Methodist, , .2
Lyman Moon was in at District 18, C-11727, , Hastings, , on the 1851 census in on 12 January 1852
851 Census, found in district 18, Madoc Township. Aged 28 at next birthday.
In 1851 (Roll C-11727) he is listed as running an inn in a frame house. He had three people living with his family:
Edwin Edson from the US of no known age,
Mary Galloway and 17 year old Irish girl,
William Kidd age 35 from England.
There are two other Moon families living in Huntingtdon Twp., where Lyman was listed as being born. I assume they are his Father and older brother.3
Lyman Moon was in at, Hastings, , on the 1861 census
In the 1861 census, Lyman's tavern is a frame building measuring 30' x 48' and of 2 stories. It is located on 1/4 acre of land where he also keeps 1 cow. He has $2000 in vested and employs 4 people:
Lachlie McHuiga, a 24 year old Pres. Scotsman as clark; (paid $ 12 per month)
Hugh Campbell, a 17 year old Canadian R.C. as servant; (paid $ 12 per month)
Mary Gagnon, a 20 year old C.E. Irish girl as servant; (paid $ 7 per month)
Sarah Ray, a 16 year old Canadian C.E. member as servant. (paid $ 7 per month)
It is unclear, but it seems in the past year the tavern consumed 20 gal. of oil and #200 of candles valued at $ 125.
Lyman's family is listed as being Wesleyan Methodists.4

Margaret Moore

F, b. 27 October 1827, d. 26 January 1904

Margaret Moore was buried ?unknown, at Moira Cemetery.
Margaret Moore It seems that Lyman died between 1861 and 1871 and Margaret is now running the tavern and she is listed as a widow. The information on Roll C - 9994 pages 23/24 line 19 shows Lyman is no longer living at home and the tavern has 1 carriage/sleigh, is still 1/4 of an acre on lot 1 conc 6, but now she keeps 2 cows and 3 pigs and has killed 2 pigs in the last year. It is strange since now she is listed as being of Scotish origin, yet the 1891 (T-6343) census states her parents both came from Ireland. The 1901 census (T-6473) confirms her father as being Irish, and states she was Irish as well.
Margaret made a good go of the tavern it seems as she had 7 people employed in 1891.[Moon - PeterJackson.FTW]
