When the Archbishop von Firmian began his war on the Protestants in Austria in 1731-1732, over 22,000 were forced to leave the country. Although most found exile in East Prussia, others settled near Berlin, in the state of Hannover, and in the Netherlands. About 80 families emigrated to Georgia from 1734-1738. Their descendants settled in Savannah, Georgia and formed an association in 1925.

For a case in point we go back in time to an event that occurred about two and a half centuries ago, in Salzburg, Austria. In 1723, Roman Catholic Archbishop Leopold von Firmian felt committed to rooting out Protestantism in his territory. To accomplish this, he issued a proclamation promising to compel all Protestants in Salzburg either to become Catholics or to leave the territory. This turned some 30,000 Lutherans into refugees.

Then, in order to sweep Salzburg clean of Protestant elements, the Archbishop issued his notorious 1731 expulsion order, mandating that all remaining Protestants, some 21,475 people, leave at once. But for the Protestant princes in Germany, who took pity on the refugees and granted them a refuge, they would have been destitute. As it turned out in many, if not in all, instances, the sturdy, hard-working, stalwart Salzburgers becamean asset to the sovereign who allowed them to stay and settle in his state. The king of Prussia, for example, fared extremely well with the Salzburg refugees, whom he granted asylum and land in his eastern-most province of East Prussia.

In the course of the long Catholic-Protestant struggle waged throughout Europe between the Reformation and 1800, none had so decisive an outcome as that waged in Salzburg, now a south central province in Austria. Because the local ruler was Catholic, there was intense pressure on all Protestants (e.g. Lutherans) throughout Salzburg to either convert to Catholicism or to leave Salzburg. Very few Lutherans were willing to convert, and in 1723, 30,000 Lutherans fled Salzburg. Then in 1731 Roman Catholic Archbishop Count Leopold Von Firmian issued his famous "expulsion order" which ordered all remaining Protestants to leave Salzburg immediately. The entire Protestant population was immediately expelled from Salzburg; a total of 22,000 men, women and children. Some three hundred of them emigrated to Georgia in the American colonies, but the bulk of the emigrants settled in the other Lutheran principalities, especially in east Prussia. In later years many of their children and grandchildren became 'delayed' emigrants to America.
