Exerpt:
Stringer was know as "the Bishop who ate his boots." He was the Anglican Bishop of the Yukon from 1905–1931. In 1909, he and a companion became lost in an ice fog on the way back to Dawson. Food ran short. The men scraped the hair off their sealskin boots and boiled them, then drank the broth, which Bishop Stringer said, "was tough and stringy, but fairly satisfying." Eventually the men were found. The story inspired a scene in Charlie Chaplin’s movie The Gold Rush.3
