Spencer began military service on 2 August 1862 at at age 19, Tunnel City, Monroe, Wis, Since then we've (me and my cousin Cherie Spencer Wild out in Toledo, Wash.) a considerable amount of information about William J.'s Civil War service. Seem that he was in Co. G of the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry and was discharged for disability in l862. He later rejoined the 2nd Minn. Cavalry in l864 and was discharged in l865. They were paying pretty large bounties (today's signing bonuses) and I suspect , like most Spencers I've know, was out to make a stake. The 2nd Minn. Cav. fought the Indian wars in western Minn. and N.D. following the Souix Uprising.
dicharged 1862, Co. G, 3rd Wis. Infantry.¹ He ended military service on 29 July 1863 at Mound City, Pulaski, Illinois; His unit, the 25th Wis. Infantry moved from Tunnel City to Fort Snelling, MN and then to New Ulm, MN.

Later it moved further south and took part in the seige of Vicksberg.
William was dischared for disbility. Details: cardiac hypertrophy and dilation, chronic gastritus.¹ He began military service on 9 February 1864 at In the 2nd Minesota Cavalry at the age 22, , Hennepin, , Information appears to come from Civil War pension material.¹ He ended military service on 29 December 1865 at Mustered out, but also deafness problems, Fort Snelling, Hennepin, MN; From late May 1864, the regiment took part in the battle called Ta-Ha-Kouty Mountain.
