Das altpreußische Husaren-Regiment No.5 existierte seit 1740 und überlebte auch die Heeresorganisation von 1806, so daß es unter verändertem Namen als Leib-Husaren-Regiment in Danzig weiterbestand.

Zunächst wurden sie wegen ihrer Uniform nur "Schwarze Husaren" genannt. Ihren Namen hatten sie nach ihrer eigenartigen Bekleidung, dem schwarzen Dolman mit den weißen Schnüren. Auf der Mütze trugen sie zudem das Zeichen der Tapferkeit ohne Todesfurcht: den Totenkopf.
