Monzie Kirk was believed to have been dedicated to St Lawrence and as far back as 1535 Monzie was a prebend of Dunblane with a Reader. The first recorded Minister is shown as 1593. The current building dates from 1831 and in 1843 the Congregation was led out for the Disruption by the Rev. John Reid Omond. A wooden building was built the same year and was known as the “Spale Kirk”. This was replaced by a more substantial building in 1868 and in 1938 the United Free Church was closed, both Congregations again united in worship at Monzie.

John Johnston: Land Patent, 26 May 1836 (from reel at Nepean Library, taken Apr. 19, 2001).
200 acres, Lot 20, cons 5 Gloucester, Ottawa District, issued 20 June 1836 by Thomas McKay, Book BX Folio 361,
John as a discharged Sergant, did not mention the Royal Atrillery. This is our John.

John Johnston: Land Patent, 4 Nov. 1847 (from reel at Nepean Library, taken Feb. 21, 2000).
100 acres, East 1/2 Lot 9, cons 6 Front of Rideau, Gloucester, Dalhousie District, issued 9 Dec. 1847.
John was a discharged soldier from the Royal Atrillery. Not our John.

1861 map has the lot split in two and James Johnston as owner of the other half. There is also two other properties with the names of James and John in the area, as well as David's land.

In Bytown, 13 March 1833, John applied for 200 acres of land in Gloucester, the entire lot 20, cons. 5 Ottawa Front and it is on this land that we find his sons James and David in 1861. See above the granting of his patent for the land.

David's wife Elizabeth Stewart's parents were born in Dunblane, Perthshire, Scotland as well. Possibly the Johnston's and Stewart's both came from the same place.

Information for photo from book on R.A. Uniforms from War Museum, year 1846:
Company Sergeant Royale Artillery

COMPANY SERGEANT was a rank peculiar to the Royal Artillery, borne by senior N.C.O.s of the foot artillery companies. It will be seen that the badge of rank is similar to that of colour sergeant in the infantry, although the rank of colour sergeant could have no meaning in the Royal Artillery, whose guns are its colours. This plate gives a good idea of the uniform in which the foot artillery companies fought in the Crimean War, although by then the shape of the head-dress had been altered slightly. The uniform of an officer would have been very much like it, with different rank badges, of course, and oak leaf embroidery on the collar and cuff slashes.

This was the last uniform worn by the old artillery companies. In 1858, after the Crimean War, the regiment, like the rest of the army, went into tunics similar to those worn to-day, and was organised into self-contained batteries, each with its own guns and horses, under the Commander-in-Chief, and not the Master General of the Ordnance.

Terry Fndley claims the 4th Bat. R.A. was mostly stationed in P.Q. at Quebec City. Records might be found in two churches there: Garrison(FHL 1430786 for Montreal) and Metropolitan.

Wellington had 67,000 soldiers (of whom 24,000 were British, the remainder being German, Dutch, and Belgian) and Napoleon had 74,000. The French casualties numbered about 37,000 coalition casualties were similar including some 13,000 British troops.
