Seeking help in finding some Prussian places mentioned (and probably not spelled correctly) re origin of the Charles/Carl/Karl Homuth family of Turnberry Township. Family legend indicates the family originated from Ludwig near Frankfurt. Obituary for wife Hannah Christina Homuth says she was a “native of Bradenburry, Prussia” (Brandenburg ??). Transcriptions for Waterloo County Marriages 1858-1869 indicate that son John Julius Homuth was born at Breitenstein Friedberg Prussia. All other marriage and death registrations and all census returns list places of birth as either Prussia or Germany. The Homuth family emigrated ca.1858/60 to Waterloo Twp., Waterloo County, Ontario and to Turnberry Twp., Huron County in 1863. Parts of the former Prussia came under Polish control after WWII, and place names were changed. First, I am not directly related to the Homuth family. I was doing research for a cousin (by marriage) who was also on staff at the same school as I was. That lady is now 100 years old, experiencing a few health inconveniences but still extremely sharp.

Karl (Charles Sr., Carl) Homuth, wife Johanne Christine (Hannah Christina) Miller/Muller, and their six children emigrated in 1858 from Breitenstein in the County of Friedeberg. The family first settled in the Galt/Waterloo area before moving to a farm just west of Wingham in Turnberry Township, Huron County. One son married and remained in the Waterloo area for a few years before coming to Wingham and opening a clothing store. Some of the Homuths later moved to Toronto.

Breitenstein today is Bobrowko
Friedeberg today is Strzelce Krajenskie

This area is now part of Poland. Given the events of WWII, I doubt if any records survived.
The current Polish name for Breitenstein was given to me by two sources: an archivist in Stratford, Ontario, and a Homuth contact who apparently lives in Europe. The Homuth contact also directed me to emigrate lists at www.genealogienetz.de My German is almost non-existent, but I was able to recognize the correct family.

The Homuth contact also mentioned another Homuth who came from the same region and also apparently emigrated to North Anerica. The contact is trying to find his gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather, born 1836 in the same area.

With guidance from my cousin, family folklore, family papers, census, vital stats, and newspapers I was able to trace all six children, spouses, and their children, etc. down to close to the present day.
