The name and hometown match my great-grandfather as does the age (born in 1847, so 23 in 1870). One correction to my previous e-mail, August was born in 1848 (May 20), it was his wife Ernestine who was born in 1847 (Feb 7).

In his obituary, he was a member of the German Veterans Society and in one of his immigration records (Hamburg passenger list)his occupation is listed as militaer invalide.¹
