Sad accident - It is our painful duty to record this week still another fatal accident. On Saturday last, Mr. John Stirling, of the 4th con. Goderich Township, was assisting his brother with his threshing, and whilst standing on a scaffolding in the barn throwing sheaves to the feeders, a rail which supported the scaffold broke, and Mr. Stirling was precipitated on the feed board of the thrashing machine. He fell on his side, and his left hand was caught by the iron teeth of the cylinder and his arm was dragged thru the machine. Before any one could make an effort to stop the horses, the left arm and shoulder were wrenched from the unfortunate man's body, and the machine was stopped by the jam. Mr. Stirling was removed, but he expired in about eight minutes and without speaking. His left side was dreadfully crushed. In would be difficult to describe the feelings of those present at the sudden and shocking accident, and a gloom has been cast over the entire neighborhood. Mr. Stirling was much respected by all who knew him, and although he never took a very active part in the affairs of the township his death will leave a sad blank. He was an old resident, having come to this section 35 years ago from his birth place, Forfarshire, Scotland, and by his industry helped the advancement of the country, and had at his death a most excellent farm. He was but 49 years of age, and was an elder in Bethany Presbyterian Church. He leaves a wife and thirteen children to mourn his loss, and they have the sincere sympathy of the neighborhood. The funeral on Monday was largely attended. Dr. Stanbury was sent for, but of course his skil was not required.
